A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR, TIM BURGESS
I am so glad that you have taken some time to learn just what First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon (FBCMV) is all about. So, let me tell you some things that I think you would like to know.
We are a historic church. Our church was founded in 1866 and the oldest building, which is now our Fellowship Hall, was completed in 1902. We value our heritage. But we also strive to be a church that is in touch with the needs of the present community. While we see our history as a meaningful foundation, we continuously seek to develop fresh, innovative ways to be a church which is relevant to the times.
FBCMV is a Southern Baptist church that holds to the "Baptist Faith & Message". We are a community that seeks to practice the Word of God in every area of our lives. We want FBC to be a place where people experience God, find practical help for life, and establish life-long friendships.
Our two primary worship times are on Sunday at 9am and 10:30am. It is in this service that we desire to meet God corporately and celebrate our salvation in Christ. Our Sunday night service is a time of Bible study beginning at 6:00pm. In both services, we strive for a blended music style for all generations to enjoy. Whatever the service, we seek to respond positively to Bible messages that teach us to know Jesus Christ, obey Him, and properly represent Him to the world. If you have questions regarding the Music Ministry, please see our Minister of Music, Darren Selvidge.
At FBC, children and students are important to us. Our Awana Ministry for children is filled with fun and great teaching. Over 80 children attend our Awana ministry, which is held every Wednesday night at 5:45pm during the school year. Our Student Ministry is led by our Student Ministry Pastor, Nate Jones. We have around 80 to 100 students that attend every Wednesday night at 6:00pm... it's AWESOME!
Thank you for taking the time to review our web site and I hope to meet you this Sunday!
Pastor Tim

WHAT IS A CHURCH?
According to the Baptist Faith and Message: "A New Testament church of the Lord Jesus Christ is an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel; observing the two ordinances of Christ, governed by His laws, exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word, and seeking to extend the gospel to the ends of the earth. Each congregation operates under the Lordship of Christ through democratic processes. In such a congregation, each member is responsible and accountable to Christ as Lord. Its scriptural officers are pastors and deacons. While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture. (Matt 16:15-19; 18:15-20; Acts 2:41-42, 47; 5:11-14; 6:3-6; 13:1-3; 14:23,27; 15:1-30; 16:5; 20:28, Rom 1:7, 1 Cor 1:2; 3:16; 5:4-5; 7:17; 9:13-14; 12; Eph 1:22-23; 2:19-22; 3:8-11,21; 5:22-32; Phil 1:1; Col 1:18; 1 Tim 2:9-14; 3:1-15; 4:14; Heb 11:39-40; 1 Peter 5:1-4; Rev 2-3; 21:2-3)

WHAT IS THE MISSION STATEMENT OF FIRST BAPTIST?
First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon exists to reach people for Christ in Mt. Vernon and the World.
HOW IS FIRST BAPTIST STRUCTURED TO COMPLETE THIS MISSION?
First Baptist is structured for the spiritual growth of it's members. The process of growth is the same for completing our mission statement. You will notice that, in the process listed below, the order is important.
- Worship - Worship includes my heart connecting to the heart of God in such a way that my life reflects the character and truths of God (John 4:24; Ps 34:3; Matt 22:37). Worship naturally leads to our love for ministry.
- Ministry - Jesus defined true ministry as a fruit of worship as found in Matt 22:37, 38 "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. And second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. You see true ministry is my heart connecting with God's heart concerning my neighbor (Acts 2:41-45).
- Evangelism - In order to complete our mission of reaching Mt. Vernon and the world with the gospel of Christ, our heart must be knit with God's in worship and in ministry which will open natural doors for evangelism (Matt 28:19-20 & Acts 2:47).
- Discipleship - In Scripture the Christian is challenged to reproduce Christ in others. This can only come from proper worship, ministry and evangelism. The purpose of discipleship is to teach and exemplify Christ as He did for His disciples (2 Tim 2:2).
- Fellowship - Prov 27:17 - As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friends.
HOW DO I JOIN FIRST?

This is best for those individuals who are members of another Baptist church of similar faith and belief.
- By your statement of faith in Christ
This is best for those individuals who have invited Jesus into their lives and have been biblically baptized by immersion but are not presently members of a Baptist church or are unable to secure a letter of church membership.
- By salvation and baptism
This is best for those individuals who are inviting Jesus into their lives and are beginning an eternal relationship with Him, and wish to be baptized as a symbol of their acceptance of Jesus.
- By baptism
This is best for those individuals who have previously invited Jesus into their lives but have not yet been biblically baptized by immersion and wish to be baptized as a symbol of their acceptance of Jesus.
